Joshua
chapter 1
Tuesday
14th
June 2011 - teaching by our Assistant Pastor, Barry Forder
The opening chapter of book of
Joshua sees an 80 year old man, who was born in slavery in Egypt,
who had seen all his own generation die in the wilderness, who had
learned to be a servant to Moses, the nation’s revered leader,
suddenly plunged in at the deep end as he is given the commission by
the God of Israel to now take and lead the nation to victory against
the giant tribes inhabiting Canaan
God encourages this weak man to ‘be strong’, this timid man to ‘be
of good courage’, this fearful man to ‘be not afraid’, and this man
who would naturally be inclined to throw-the-towel-in, under the
weight of expectation and pressure, to ‘not be dismayed’. But Joshua
will not be alone, his God will be with him and promises ‘good
success’ if he holds onto the Word of God – meditating in it day and
night.
Canaan does not represent heaven, but the place where God’s
delivered ones should learn to walk in victory. Yes there are giants
to overcome – but the promise to the overcomer is that we will rule
and reign with Christ (2 Tim 2:12 / Rev 3:21).
“There’s a higher place to go, beyond belief, beyond belief. Where
we reach the next plateau, beyond belief” (Petra – from the song
“Beyond Belief”). [iTunes]
