The book of Genesis is the book
of beginnings: it explains the origin of space, time, matter,
energy, the universe, stars and planets, earth, the seas, life, man,
animals, vegetation etc., and the beginning of nations, languages,
government, culture, cities, music and more. But Genesis also brings
us face to face with beginning of sin, death, murder, rebellion and
defiance against God, and sees the birth of false religion – mans
attempt to cover his sin and get right with God by his own efforts.
It introduces us to the first world dictator and world government –
something destined to be repeated in our time.
However, it also reveals God as a knowable God, a God of love and
mercy, and yet a God of justice. It demonstrates the sovereignty of
God and the free will of man. We see the first blood sacrifice as
atonement for sin, and the promise of a Saviour who will redeem
mankind. It ultimately answers the fundamental questions of life:
Who am I? Where did I come from? What am I doing here? What happens
when I die? What is begun in Genesis is concluded in Revelation.
These are the book-ends of the most important library of all.
